ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Junior LHP Christian Stolo threw his first Division I complete game and led 28th-ranked Nevada to an 8-3 victory over New Mexico on Saturday at Lobo Field. The Wolf Pack clinched the series victory over the Lobos, improving to 12-1 in three-game series this season. Nevada improved to 37-11 overall and 20-6 in the Mountain West.
With today's victory and UNLV's 3-2 win over San Diego State, Nevada now has a three-game lead over the Aztecs in MW standings. The Wolf Pack can clinch the MW title outright tomorrow with a victory and a San Diego State loss. Nevada is in pursuit of its fourth conference title in baseball and its first MW title in the program's history in the conference.
The Wolf Pack sat through an hour-long lightning delay after the first inning before defeating the Lobos for the second time in as many days. Stolo -- the Reno native and McQueen High graduate -- allowed just two earned runs and five hits, improving to 6-1 on the mound.
"Christian was spectacular and it doesn't get any better than that," said head coach Jay Johnson. "I thought our guys handled an early weather delay very well and we played a pretty complete game all around. We'll have to refocus and come out ready to go tomorrow."
Nevada jumped out to an early lead with three runs on two hits in the first inning. Trenton Brooks opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Cal Stevenson. Kewby Meyer followed with his second two-RBI home run in the past two games, blasting a two-run shot over the right field fence that was nearly identical to his second inning home run on Friday. Meyer has five home runs on the season.
New Mexico plated one run in its half of the first before the game was delayed for nearly an hour with lightning in the area.
When the game restarted, Stolo continued dealing and shutout the Lobos in six straight innings. New Mexico plated one run in the eighth and ninth, but the result was never in doubt as Stolo finished the game. The six-foot lefty allowed just nine base runners in nine frames, lowering his ERA to 2.95 on the season. Stolo's previous collegiate high for innings pitched was 7.0.
The Wolf Pack added four runs in the fifth inning with clutch two-out hitting. Nevada scored all of its runs in the frame with three straight two-out, RBI hits. Brooks added another RBI single to spark Nevada's two-out hit streak. Meyer doubled down the left field line, scoring Stevenson and Brooks. Bryce Greager capped the Pack's big inning with an RBI single to right center.
Jordan Pearce scored Nevada's eighth run of the game after leading off the eighth inning with a single. The designated hitter singled to left field, advanced to second on Jordan Devencenzi's single, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
Nevada finished with eight runs on 10 hits. The Pack has now scored at least eight runs in 12 of its last 13 games. Meyer -- the left fielder from Waipahu, Hawai'i -- went 3-of-4 at the plate to lead the Pack with three hits, four RBI and two runs. Greager and Pearce each added multi-hit games, while Brooks drove in two runs and scored one.
The series finale between the Wolf Pack and Lobos is set for noon PT, Sunday at Lobo Field. Nevada's probable starter is to be announced.
