TUCSON, Ariz. -- A strong opening round Friday by Nevada's younger players has the Wolf Pack in the thick of things with 36 holes to play at the Mountain West Championships.

Corey Eddings opened with a 5-under 66 and fellow freshman Grant Booth was one shot back with a 67 as the Wolf Pack shot a 4-under 280 on Friday at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. Sophomore Nick Fuller matched his career-best round with the Wolf Pack with a 1-under 70 as Nevada has three golfers in the top 10 after the first round.

Nevada is tied for second with San Diego State at 4 under. UNLV leads the way at 11 under after 18 holes. The second round is Saturday with the final 18 holes set for Sunday.

"Today was the start we needed," Nevada coach Jacob Wilner said. "Between Grant and Corey, there was only one bogey on the day. We are looking for all five guys to show up for the second round tomorrow."

Freshman Jooho Lee shot 77 in the first round and senior Nicholas Smits was two shots off of Lee with a 79. UNLV's Kurt Kitayama opened with a 65 and he leads the way in the individual race, one shot better than Eddings who is alone in second place. Booth is part of a trio of players tied for third with Fuller in the hunt, tied for eighth.
