MARICOPA, Ariz. -- The Nevada women's golf team had been showing signs in recent weeks of breaking through and the Wolf Pack did just that on Monday, taking the lead after the first two rounds at the Cowgirl Classic.

Nevada opened with its low round of the season and held strong in the afternoon round to take the 36-hole lead at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course. The Wolf Pack shot 294 and 300 and holds a five-stroke lead over Washington State with 18 holes to play.

"The team played well today," second-year coach Kathleen Takaishi said. "The conditions were tougher this afternoon. I am really proud of how they battled and stayed committed to their gameplan."

The first round 294 marked the lowest round of the season for the Pack and tied for the 11th-lowest round in program history. It is the third-best score under Takaishi. The 36-hole total of 584 ranks fourth best in program history.

Senior Nikki Prichard opened with a 1-over 73 and then played strong as the wind picked up in the afternoon. She closed with an even-par 72 and is one shot off the lead in the individual race. Emelie Lundstrom of USF shot an even-par 144 on Monday and Prichard is one back at 145.

"Nikki played very solid today," Takaishi said. "I'm sure she feels like she left a lot of shots out there. She stuck with her gameplan and birdied her last two holes to finish even for her second round."

Senior Bethany Wurster and junior Caryn Khoo each came in with a 4-over 148 after 36 holes, three shots back of Prichard and tied for 13th. Freshman Celyn Khoo shot 75-78 and is tied for 33rd while sophomore Jordan Keyser is tied for 83rd.

Nevada has not won a tournament as a team since 2006-07 when it won its own Wolf Pack Invitational. It has not seen an individual win since 2010-11 season.

The final round of the 22-team tournament, hosted by Wyoming, is Tuesday. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
