SAN DIEGO -- The University of Nevada (7-12, 1-3 MW) men's tennis team lost a Mountain West match 5-1 at #37 San Diego State (15-5, 3-1 MW) on Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Wolf Pack is now 7-12 on the season and 1-3 in MW play while the Aztecs improved to 15-5 and 3-1 in conference action.
Nevada plays its final two home matches of the season this week hosting Boise State (7-14, 1-2 MW) on Friday and Utah State (16-7, 4-1 MW) on Sunday. Both matches will start at noon at Caughlin Club located at 4100 Caughlin Parkway in Reno.
"It was very close for most of the match," head coach Erik Burton said. "At one point we had great momentum in singles winning first sets at #3, #5 and finishing up well at #4 against #37 SDSU."
SDSU won all three doubles matches to secure the team point. The Aztecs 65th ranked doubles team of Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens downed the Pack's Moez Chargui and Robert Alan 6-3 in the #1 doubles match. Marko Goles-Babic and Santiago Cevallos secured the team point for SDSU with a 6-3 victory over Andrew Poustie and Ryan Andrada in the #3 doubles pairing. Jonas Meinzer and Milen Ianakiev won the #2 doubles match 6-3 over Billy Bumgardner and Robert Margitfalvi.
Jebens put the Aztecs up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Poustie in the #2 singles match. Meinzer defeated Margitfalvi 7-5, 6-3 at #6 singles to make the score 3-0. Gelbrich, ranked 111th by the ITA clinched the match for SDSU with a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory over Chargui at #1 singles.
SDSU's Andranik Khachatryan won in three sets over Allan 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2 at #5 singles to score the Aztecs fifth point of the match. Andrada scored the Pack's lone point of the day with a three set win at #4 singles 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4 over Ianakiev. The #3 singles match between Goles-Babic and Nevada's Fernando Sunago went unfinished. Sunago was leading 2-1 in the deciding third set when the match was stopped.
