ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- University of Nevada (8-15) senior Moez Chargui's three set victory clinched the Wolf Pack's 4-2 upset victory of #67 Utah State (18-9) to advance the Pack to the semifinals of the 2015 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship being hosted by the University of New Mexico at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. Nevada will play third seed San Diego State on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. PT.
The seventh seeded Pack lost 4-1 to the Aggies back on April 12 in Reno but scored the upset of the second seed today.
Chargui, the MW Co-Player of the Year, lost the first set to Karan Salwan 6-3 but cruised in the next two 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the fourth point for the Pack to seal the 4-2 victory. The singles win was the 71st of his career and moved him into sole possession of second place on the career wins list. Laurent Garcin (2007-10) holds the school record with 72 career victories.
The winningest doubles team in school history, Fernando Sunago and Andrew Poustie started the match with a 6-4 victory in the #1 doubles match over Salwan and Matt Sweet. It was the 37th doubles win for the Pack duo. USU evened the doubles competition when Jaime Barajas and Jack Swindells defeated Robert Margitfalvi and Ryan Andrada 6-3 in the #2 doubles match. Chargui teamed with Robert Allan at #3 doubles to down Marcus Fritz and Dennis Baumgartner 7-6 (7-5) to clinch the doubles point.
Poustie won the #3 singles match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to put the Pack up 2-0. Allan fell to Sebastian Schneider 6-3, 6-0 in the #6 singles match and the Aggies had their first point. Margitfalvi put the Pack back up by two points with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Barajas in the #5 singles match.
Swindles defeated Sunago in two sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to score the Aggies final point of the match. The #2 doubles match was not finished after Chargui had clinched the match. Andrada had won the first set 7-6 (7-1) but was down 5-4 in the second when the match was stopped.
