Day Two ResultsĀ
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Coming off a strong opening round, the Nevada women's golf team got better in Tuesday's second round at the Mountain West Golf Championship on Monday at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club.
After a 299 on Monday, the Wolf Pack carded a 296 on Tuesday and sits alone in third place with 18 holes to go. Freshman Celyn Khoo was rock solid for the Pack on Tuesday, notching par after par until she had 17 of them to go along with a birdie on the par-3 14th for a 1-under round of 71. That led the team and pushed her into fourth place heading into Wednesday's final round.
Nevada's 296 was the low round of the day, matched by San Jose State as the Spartans moved into a first-place tie with San Diego State at 13-over 589. Nevada is six back at 595 and two shots clear of fourth place UNLV (597). The top finisher between the Silver State schools wins three points in the Governor's Series, presented by NVEnergy.
Nikki Prichard went out in 5 over on Tuesday but put up three birdies on the back and came in with a 76 and sits in a tie for 10th going into the final round. Fellow senior Bethany Wurster closed with birdies on 16 and 18 and shot a 73 on Tuesday to move up to a tie for 14th. Junior Caryn Khoo is 18th after a 76 and sophomore Jordan Keyser enters the final round tied for 40th.
"I thought we played very well today," second-year coach Kathleen Takaishi said. "We battled through the last six holes to come in with a good score. Celyn played great today. Bethany played solid and finished extremely well. She birdied 16 and 18 and made a great par save on 17. They are excited to play tomorrow. We are paired with two really good teams. We need to stick to our gameplan and continue to play our own game. We definitely need to take advantage of the birdie opportunities and limit our mistakes."
San Diego State's Milagros Chaves backed up her first-round 66 with a 74 on Tuesday and still holds the individual lead at 4 under. Celyn Khoo, who leads the tournament with 30 pars through two rounds, is five shots back at 1 over.
Prichard and Wurster have found success on the par-5s with Wurster playing them at 4 under for the first two rounds and Prichard at 3 under. The final 18 holes is Wednesday and live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
