MINDEN, Nev. -- The Nevada football team's spring practice rolled on and into Douglas County on Saturday as the Wolf Pack scrimmaged in front of approximately 500 fans at Douglas High School on a perfect Saturday afternoon.
After opening drills, Nevada went live for nearly two hours on Saturday. The defense had the upper hand early on before the offense began taking control later in the scrimmage.
"Let me first say thank you to our friends at Douglas High, ESPN Radio 94.5, and Scheels for helping us to take our scrimmage on the road this afternoon," third-year coach Brian Polian said. "We enjoyed being away from campus and being out in the community around Pack fans."
"I was pleased with the work done by both sides of the ball this afternoon. There were significant plays made on both offense and defense. I thought the defense controlled the tempo in the early going and then the offense clearly began to exert their will when the ball was moved to the red zone by scoring multiple touchdowns. I also know that there is a lot of film for us to teach from and we look forward to getting back with the players tomorrow afternoon to do just that."
Nevada's defensive front, expected to be a strength this season, set the tone at the beginning of the scrimmage. Senior Ian Seau notched a tackle for loss early and seniors Rykeem Yates and Lenny Jones shared a sack to end a drive.
Freshman Malik Reed, who has flashed at times this spring, recorded two sacks early on and cornerback Elijah Moody forced a fumble.
But the Pack running attack, with senior Don Jackson and sophomore James Butler leading the way, got the offense going with a couple of big runs.
In the second half, Nevada went to situational work and the offense found its groove in the red zone. Jackson, Butler, sophomore quarterback Dante Mayes, freshman back Blake Wright, and freshman quarterback Hunter Fralick all scored on rushing touchdowns.
Fralick also hit Brayden Sanchex for a red zone score as Sanchez caught three touchdown passes on the day. The final score came on a perfect 65-yard bomb from Tyler Stewart to Sanchez.
Nevada will practice three more times in the upcoming week before spring ball concludes with the annual Silver and Blue Spring Game on Saturday at Mackay Stadium. That will begin at 1 p.m.
