RENO, Nev. -- Junior
Megan Sweet went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and sophomore
Raquel Martinez had an RBI single but it wasn't enough as the Nevada softball fell into an early hole and could not get out of it in its 10-5 loss to UNLV on Friday afternoon.
Senior
Megan Dortch (4-9) took the loss for the Pack while sophomore
McKenna Isenberg tossed 4.2 innings of relief and blanked the Rebels in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings that helped keep the Pack in the game.
The Rebels jumped on the Pack early to take a 7-0 lead but in the bottom of the third Nevada struck back. Sophomore
Nikki Orozco led-off the inning with a walk and with one out, senior
Karley Hopkins ripped an opposite-field single to give the Pack runners on first and second. Jenkins delivered with a single up the middle that scored Orozco and Hopkins after the ball was misplayed by the Rebels' centerfielder. On the play, Jenkins went from first to third.
In the same inning, with the score at 7-2 in favor of UNLV, Sweet registered her 42nd RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Jenkins and made it a 7-3 game.
Nevada continued to chip away at the Rebel lead in the bottom of the fourth. Senior
Molly McWilliams drew a walk to lead-off the frame and went to second on a grounder from senior
Ashley Butera. With one out, sophomore
Raquel Martinez knocked a base-hit up the middle that scored McWilliams and cut Nevada's deficit to three, 7-4.
After Isenberg held the Rebels scoreless in the top of the sixth, Orozco reached on her second walk of the game and was replaced by the pinch runner
Aaliyah Gibson. The speedy Gibson moved from first to third on a single from freshman
Alyssa Mendez and later scored that made it 7-5 on a throwing error by the pitcher looking to throw her out at home.
A three-run home run in the top of the seventh gave the Rebels some breathing room and a 10-5 lead that helped seal the victory in the series-opener.
First pitch for the second game of the Governor's Series clash is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Hixson Park.
