RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada men's tennis team stunned No. 50 San Francisco, cruising to a 6-1 victory in its home debut Saturday afternoon at the Caughlin Club. The Wolf Pack won the doubles point and five-of-six singles matches in its most complete performance of the season.
Nevada (2-7) snapped the Don's (6-4) six-match win streak while recording their first victory over an ITA nationally ranked opponent this season. Nevada won two doubles matches by three games apiece and won four singles matches in straight sets.
After opening the season with eight straight away matches, Nevada improved to 1-0 at home in front of 214 fans at the Caughlin Club.
"I think this was a columniation of getting better through tough competition and finally playing in front of our fans on our own court," said head coach Erik Burton. "That's why we play a tough schedule - to raise your level. Today, we took a big step towards that but we're nowhere near our peak ability at this point."
Nevada won the doubles point for the third time this season behind 6-3 victories on courts two and three. Sophomore Robert Allan and senior Moez Chargui gave Nevada an early edge, cruising to a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 match. Tied at three games apiece against the Don's Thomas Takemoto and Vasco Valverde, Nevada won the final three games to clinch the win. The duo improved to 3-5 on the spring season.
The Dons pulled even with a victory in No. 1 doubles, leaving it up to court No. 2 to decide the doubles point. Nevada's junior Billy Bumgardner and freshman Robert Margitfalvi took four of the match's last five games, winning 6-3 over San Francisco's Chris Brockstedt and Alex Santiago. Bumgardner and Margitfalvi clinched the doubles point for the Pack while winning their first match together this spring.
Freshman Mile Cilic won a straight-set No. 5 singles match over Brockstedt, 6-3, 6-3, in the first completed singles match of the day. Cilic pulls to .500 on the season with an 8-8 singles record.
Nevada took a 3-0 lead following the No. 4 match, where Allan defeated USF's Vasco Valverde by six games to four in both sets. Allan improves to 6-9 in singles.
Junior Ryan Andrada clinched a Wolf Pack victory with the match's fourth point, claiming No. 3 singles. The Visalia, Calif., native defeated USF's Thomas Takemoto with ease, 6-2, 6-3. Andrada improves to 9-5.
In No. 2 singles, junior Andrew Poustie won his first set in an extra game (7-5) and won the second set, 6-4, to defeat the Dons' Nils Skajaa. Poustie recorded his team-leading 11th singles victory of the season to give Nevada a 5-0 lead.
In the final match of the day, senior Moez Chargui won a thrilling wire-to-wire contest with Bernardo Saraiva in a super tiebreaker. Chargui won the first set 7-6 (7-2) before Saraiva pulled level with a 7-6 (7-4) advantage in set two. In a third set super tiebreaker, Chargui won 10-6 to provide Nevada with its sixth point. Chargui becomes the second Wolf Pack player to reach double digit singles victories this season.
The Wolf Pack will return to action on Sunday, March 15, hosting Pacific. Action between the Pack and Tigers will get underway at 1 p.m. PT from the Caughlin Club.
