RENO, Nev. -- The University of Nevada (6-10, 1-1 MW) men's tennis team dropped its first home match of the season falling 4-1 to #44 New Mexico (14-8, 2-0 MW) in a Mountain West match at Caughlin Club. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 6-10 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Lobos improved to 14-8 and 2-0 in the MW.
Nevada plays its next three matches on the road starting with a nonconference contest with Montana Thursday in Las Vegas. The Pack and the UNLV Rebels square off on Friday. On Sunday Nevada is at San Diego State.
The Lobos earned the doubles point taking the #1 and #3 matches. At #3 doubles Mitchell McDaniels and Samir Iftikhar defeated the Pack's Robert Margitfalvi and Billy Bumgardner 6-2 in the first completed match of the day. Nevada's Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago evened it up with a 7-5 victory over James Hignett and Augustus Ge at #2 doubles. Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen took the #1 doubles match winning the tiebreaker 7-3 over Robert Allan and Moez Chargui to secure the doubles point for the Lobos.
UNM won three of the four singles matches that were completed before the Lobos had the fourth point need to clinch the match. Van Leijsen won 6-1, 6-0 over Sunago in the #4 singles match to put the Lobos up 2-0. Hignett downed Allan in #5 singles 6-3, 6-3 and it was 3-0. Nevada's Ryan Andrada earned the Pack's lone point of the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #3 singles over McDaniels.
Jorge Escutia clinched the match for UNM with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Peter O'Donovan in the #6 singles match.
In the #1 singles match Chargui dropped the first set to Iftikhar 6-3 and was trailing in the second 4-2 when the match was stopped as UNM had clinched the victory. Poustie was lead the #2 singles 3-6, 6-1 and 5-2 when the match was halted.
