Nevada wins MW opener 6-1 over Air Force

RENO, Nev. -- The University of Nevada (6-9, 1-0 MW) men's tennis team opened Mountain West play with a 6-1 victory over Air Force (10-5, 0-1 MW) on Friday afternoon at Caughlin Club. Today's match was the first MW match for each school. The Wolf Pack improved to 6-9 in the season and 5-0 at home. The Falcons stand at 10-5 on the year.

The Pack returns to action on Sunday against #44 New Mexico (13-8, 1-0 MW) at 11:00 a.m. at Caughlin Club located at 4100 Caughlin Parkway in Reno.

After dropping two tiebreakers in doubles the Pack trailed 1-0 to the Falcons but swept the six singles matches to take the match 6-1.

Andrew Poustie downed Lucas Fumagalli 6-0, 6-2 in #2 singles to score the first point for Nevada and tie the match at 1-1. Robert Allan scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory at #4 singles over Max Olson to put the Pack up to stay 2-1. In the #3 singles match Robert Margitfalvi won the last four games to knock off Nicholas Carpenter 6-1, 7-5.

Mile Cilic clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #5 singles over Andrew Parks to give the Pack the fourth point needed to win the match.

Moez Chargui won the first set 6-3 but lost the second 4-6 to Grant Taylor at #1 singles. Chargui took the third set 7-5 to win his 67th career match at Nevada which ranks fourth in Pack history and broke a tie with Wessim Derbel (2009-12). Bryan McQuown (1978-81) is third with 69 while Laurent Garcin (2007-10) holds the school record with 70 career victories.

Ryan Andrada also needed three sets to win the #3 singles match over Jack McCullers 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3. With the Andrada victory Nevada won the match 6-1.

McCullers and Carpenter won the #3 doubles match for AF over Billy Bumgardner and Margitfalvi 6-3 to start the day. Taylor and Fumagalli scored a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker to down Poustie and Fernando Sunago 7-6 in #1 doubles and earn the Falcons the team point. In the #2 doubles match Allan and Chargui downed Olson and Parks dominating the tiebreaker 7-2 to win 7-6.
