BEREKELEY, Calif. - The University of Nevada (5-9) men's tennis team dropped its second match in three days to a Pac-12 ranked opponent, falling 7-0 to #30 Cal (12-5) on Wednesday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Wolf Pack lost 7-0 at #41 Stanford on Monday. The Pack is 5-9 on the season and 1-5 against ranked teams this year. Cal improved to 12-5.
Nevada returns home to begin Mountain West play versus Air Force (10-4, 0-0 MW) on Friday at noon. The match will be played at Caughlin Club located at 4100 Caughlin Parkway in Reno. Sunday the Pack hosts #44 New Mexico (12-8, 0-0 MW) at 11 a.m. at Caughlin Club.
Cal's 65th ranked doubles team of Andre Goransson and Oskar Wikberg defeated Moez Chargui and Robert Allan in #2 doubles 6-2 in the first completed match of the day. Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted defeated Billy Bumgardner and Robert Margitfalvi 6-4 in #3 doubles to secure the team point for the Golden Bears. The #1 doubles match between Cal's 36th ranked team of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton versus the Pack's Fernando Sunago and Andrew Poustie went unfinished after the team point was clinched.
The Golden Bears won all six singles matches to make the final score 7-0. J.T. Nishimura defeated Allan 6-2, 6-0 at #5 singles in the first completed match and Bayane downed Sunago 6-1, 6-1 in #3 singles to put Cal up 3-0. Engsted clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mile Cilic at #6 singles.
Bergevi, ranked 100th by the ITA, won #2 singles 6-3, 6-2 over Poustie. Goransson, who is ranked #56, split sets with Chargui at #1 singles dropping the first set 6-4 before taking the second set 6-1 and won the third set tiebreaker 10-6. Wikberg defeated Andrada 6-1, 4-6 and 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker at #4 singles to record the final point of the match.
