STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Nevada (5-8) men's tennis team had its four-match win streak snapped falling 7-0 at #41 Stanford (7-4) on Monday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 5-8 on the season while the Cardinal improved to 7-5.
"The #1 and #2 doubles teams came out pretty flat today," head coach Erik Burton said. "They played better in singles but didn't get enough momentum to overcome Stanford's talented lineup. We had good tight matches at #1, #2 and #4 singles but came up short."
Nevada plays at #28 Cal (11-5) on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. before returning home to begin Mountain West play on Friday versus Air Force at noon.
The Cardinal won the #2 and #3 doubles matches to earn the first team point. John Morrissey and Trey Strobel defeated the Pack's #3 team of Billy Bumgardner and Robert Margitfalvi 6-2 in the first complete match. Yale Goldberg and Robert Stineman clinched the point with a 6-2 victory in the #2 pairing over Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago. The #1 doubles match between Stanford's Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz and Nevada's Robert Allan and Moez Chargui went unfinished after the Cardinal had secured the doubles point.
Stanford swept the six singles matches to seal the 7-0 victory. David Hsu won #6 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Mile Cilic and David Wilczynski scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sunago in #3 singles to put the Cardinal up 3-0. Stineman clinched the match defeating Allan 6-4, 6-2 in #5 singles to give the Cardinal the fourth point needed to win the match.
Poustie dropped the first set tiebreaker 7-5 and the second set 6-2 to Morrissey in the #2 singles match. In the #1 singles match Chargui lost the first set to Fawcett 6-3 and the second set tiebreaker 7-1. Morrissey entered the match ranked 96th and Fawcet 41st.
In the final match of the day Nevada's Ryan Andrada lost in three sets 6-3, 3-6 and 7-5 to Nolan Paige in #4 singles to make the final score 7-0.
