RENO, Nev. - Sophomore Trenton Brooks hit a walk-off double and Nevada scored 10 runs in the final two innings to stun Cincinnati, 11-10, Thursday evening at Peccole Park. The 29th-ranked Wolf Pack trailed by six runs before exploding for 10 of its 11 runs and nine of its 18 hits in the final two innings.
Nevada (18-4) trailed 10-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning before loading the bases on two hits and a walk. Senior Kyle Hunt hit a two-RBI single and junior Ryan Howell pulled Nevada within one with a sac fly. With runners on the corners and two outs, Brooks doubled down the right field line on a 1-2 count to score Hunt and senior Austin Byler as the Pack dugout rushed the field.
The Wolf Pack trailed 7-1 after the top of the seventh and 10-6 after the top of the ninth, matching its biggest comeback of the season. Nevada improved to 18-4 overall and 10-1 at Peccole Park in front of 813 fans.
"When you talk about toughness, never say die attitude and character, this team just keeps showing it," said head coach Jay Johnson. "I'm speechless. I really am."
The Bearcats scored three runs in the second, one in the fourth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to lead, 7-1. The Wolf Pack left 11 runners in base through the first seven innings before coming up with one of its most dramatic victories of the season.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, senior Kewby Meyer and junior Bryce Greager lead-off with consecutive doubles to plate one run. Hunt followed with an RBI single to score Greager on two outs. Byler drew a walk to load the bases and Howell drew a bases-loaded walk to score Greager. Brooks doubled down the right field line to score Stevenson and Byler and trim Cincinnati's lead to 7-6.
Cincinnati appeared to cool the Wolf Pack rally with three runs in the top of the ninth, taking a 10-6 lead with Nevada down to its final three outs.
Greager - who tallied a season-high three hits - led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Freshman Grant Fennell pinch hit in the following at bat and doubled to right field. Senior Jordan Devencenzi drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
Hunt opened the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field, scoring Greager and Fennell to make it 10-8. Stevenson sacrificed Devencenzi and Hunt to second and third before Byler walked to load the bases for a second time in the inning. Howell trimmed the Bearcat lead to one run with a sac fly to center field, scoring Devencenzi.
Brooks, a 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, stepped the plate with two outs and runners on the corners. On a 1-2 count, Brooks drove the ball down the third base line and into the corner as Stevenson scored with ease to tie the game. Byler charged around third base and was sent home by Johnson, beating the throw to cross home plate and meet a rush of Wolf Pack players from the dugout.
Nevada scored six runs on two outs in the final two innings. The Wolf Pack finished with 18 hits to match its highest hit total of the season. Brooks and Greager led Nevada with three hits apiece while Stevenson, Howell and Hunt added two hits each.
Junior LHP Cameron Rowland started on the mound for Nevada, allowing three earned runs through two innings. Junior LHP Christian Stolo pitched five innings in relief while allowing one earned run. Junior RHP Sam Held earned the win in relief to improve to 4-0.
Cincinnati scored 10 runs on 13 hits while using five pitchers in the loss.
Game three between the Wolf Pack and Bearcats is set for a 4 p.m. PT first pitch Friday from Peccole Park. Senior RHP Jason Deitrich (1.72 ERA) is slated to start for Nevada. Cincinnati will counter with freshman LHP Dalton Lehnen (5.74).
