TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite holding two leads against the second ranked team in the nation, the Nevada softball team could not hold on as the Wolf Pack fell to No. 2 Oregon, 12-8, on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Pack (1-4, 0-0 MW) saw strong offensive performances from junior
Jasmine Jenkins who went 3-for-4 and senior
Molly McWilliams who drove in two runs in a seven-run third inning for Nevada. Sophomore
McKenna Isenberg (0-2) took the loss for Nevada despite keeping one of the nation's top offenses at bay in 2.1 innings of work.
Freshman
Aaliyah Gibson scored the first Nevada run of the day after junior
Megan Sweet reached on a fielder's choice. The Ducks responded with two runs of their own in the visiting half of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead before tacking on five more runs that chased starter
Chase Redington from the game.
Nevada started off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles from Gibson and Jenkins before Sweet was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman
Alyssa Mendez, who stayed hot after hitting her first collegiate home run in the 4-2 loss to Oregon State, hit a single to center field that scored Gibson and gave the Pack its first run of the inning. Jenkins then scored on a fielder's choice followed by Sweet scoring on an error by the shortstop that cut the Beaver lead to three, 7-4.
With the bases loaded, senior left fielder
Molly McWilliams made it 7-6 on a two RBI single followed by an RBI double from
Karley Hopkins that tied the game at 7-7. Jenkins drove Hopkins home after the Pack batted around in the inning to give Nevada its second lead of the game at 8-7.
After Oregon put runners on at second and third with two outs in the top of the fourth, Isenberg struck out the next Duck looking that preserved Nevada's 8-7 lead. The Pack failed to score in the fourth and Oregon capitalized by plating two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take an 11-8 lead before winning 12-8.
The Wolf Pack will be back in action next weekend at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic in Las Vegas.
