LUBBOCK, Texas - In the first of two matches in Texas the University of Nevada (1-6) men's team was edged by UT San Antonio (5-4) 4-3 on Friday. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 1-6 while the Roadrunners improved to 5-4. The Pack plays #32 Texas Tech (11-4) on Saturday at The Falls Tennis and Athletic Club at 6 p.m. PT.
Trailing 3-0 Nevada rallied to tie the match at 3-3 before UTSA clinched the 4-3 victory with a sweep in the #5 singles.
"We had a very poor day in #2 and #3 doubles. We did not turn the right button on early enough today," head coach Erik Burton said. "We were down 2-0 then 3-1 and came back with some tough matches to even out the match at 3-3. I thought we had a great matchup at #5 singles but we did not show up in that match to battle."
Nevada started the doubles winning the #1 pairing with Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago downing Tomas Stillman and Yannick Junger 6-1. The Roadrunners fought back taking the #2 match 6-3 as Diogo Casa and Joel Rubio defeated Robert Allan and Moez Chargui 6-3. The #3 doubles proved to be the deciding match as Tito Moreiras and Jake Rother won 6-3 over Peter O'Donovan and Billy Bumgardner to earn the doubles point for UTSA.
UTSA won the first two completed singles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Stillman swept Charqui 6-4, 6-2 in #1 singles. Moreiras defeated Sunago 6-2, 6-4 in #3 singles.
The Pack battled back winning the next three singles matches to even the score a 3-3. Allan won in three sets over Casa 6-1, 4-6 and 6-2 in #4 singles to earn the first point for Nevada. Poustie also needed three sets to knock off Junger 2-6, 6-4 and 6-3 in #2 singles. Mile Cilic got the Pack even blanking Ginting 6-0, 6-0 in #6 singles.
It all came down to the #5 singles match but the rally would fall short as Rubio won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 over Nevada's Ryan Andrada.
