RENO, Nev. - Senior Jason Deitrich pitched Nevada's first complete game of the season, leading the Wolf Pack to a 5-1 victory over Pacific on Friday afternoon.
After the game was moved ahead two hours due to weather concerns, clouds rolled in early in Friday's season opener with scattered rain late in the contest. It was no matter for Deitrich, who pitched quickly and efficiently in Nevada's fastest game of the season. Deitrich secured Nevada's first complete game since the 2014 Mountain West Tournament, when the 6-foot-6 righty shut out San Jose State.
The victory improved Nevada to 8-1 overall, matching the program's best start through nine games since 1994.
"If we're going to make strides forward as a team, we need (pitching) performances like that," said head coach Jay Johnson. "You can't win without good pitching and Deitrich continued to impress with good pitching today. We felt good about this match up with his combination of fastball, curveball and changeup."
Deitrich, a native of Graden Grove, Calif., scattered five hits and three walks through nine innings of work while striking out a season-best eight batters. Deitrich improves to 2-0 on the season while dropping his ERA to 1.96.
While Deitrich excelled on the mound, the bottom of Nevada's lineup provided the Pack with a huge lift offensively. Junior third basemen Bryce Greager, freshman catcher Michael Blasko and freshman center fielder Cal Stevenson combined for five of the team's eight hits and three of the team's four RBI.
Nevada was held scoreless through the first four innings, however, as the Tigers (0-9) opened a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a RBI single.
The Wolf Pack stormed back with five unanswered runs, beginning with two in the bottom of the fifth. Greager hit a leadoff single before Blasko, making his first collegiate start, hit a standup double to put runners on third and second. Stevenson drove in Greager with a single before senior Kewby Meyer reached on a throwing error to score Blasko.
Nevada plated two runs in the ensuing inning to open a 4-1 lead. Junior Ryan Howell and sophomore Trenton Brooks advanced to third and second base after a walk, hit by pitch and groundout. Greager lined out to center field to score Howell from third before Blasko scored Brooks on a RBI single.
Senior Kyle Hunt led off the seventh frame with a double and senior Austin Byler and Brooks walked to load the bases. Freshman Jordan Pearce drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the game's final run, expanding the Pack lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Deitrich earned two strike outs swinging and the final out on a 4-3 groundout.
The Wolf Pack and Tigers will return to action tomorrow, with game two set for a 1 p.m. PT first pitch time. Junior Christian Stolo (2.89 ERA) is Nevada's probable pitcher for game two. With a victory, Nevada would break the program's 1994 record for best start through 10 games.
