FRESNO, Calif. - Coming off arguably its biggest win in nine years last Saturday against No. 25 Wyoming, the Nevada volleyball team fell to Fresno State, 3-0, on Thursday evening in the first of two away matches this week.
The Wolf Pack (7-10, 2-3 MW) was led by sophomore
Madison Foley who posted 14 kills with seven digs while senior
Sam Willoughby racked up seven kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
Before dropping the second set, 25-21, Nevada nearly clinched the first frame. With the score tied at 9-9, junior
Madison Morell tallied back-to-back service aces that gave the Pack an 11-9 advantage. But the Bulldogs would eventually come back and take its largest lead of the match, 18-15, before head coach Lee Nelson called a timeout. After the timeout, the Pack used a 6-3 run to take a 22-21lead on a Fresno State attack error. It wouldn't be enough though as FSU would climb out of another hole to take the set, 25-23.
Despite six kills from Foley in the third set, the Pack couldn't find a way to stay alive. The Bulldogs took a commanding lead and did not relinquish but back-to-back kills from Foley and junior
Lyndsey Anderson made things interesting at match point before Fresno State tallied the match-clinching point.
The first of two volleyball matches between Nevada and UNLV in the Governor's Series sponsored by NV Energy and Barrick Gold will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Las Vegas.
