LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Caryn Khoo put up another strong round on Tuesday and the Nevada senior is just one shot back at the Aggie Invitational heading into Wednesday's final round.
Khoo, who opened with a 69 on Monday, backed it up with a 71 on Tuesday at New Mexico State Golf Course. That pushed her up one spot to a tie for second place along with BYU's Kendra Dalton, one shot back of New Mexico State's Viviana Macias. Khoo and Dalton are 4 under for the tournament and Macias, who shot 72 on Tuesday, is 5 under.
"Overall, the ladies did a nice job of staying mentally strong and making some birdies on the back nine," said coach Kathleen Takaishi. "Caryn had another solid round today. She was 3 under her last eight holes. She is striking the ball very well. She is in a great position. It will be fun to watch tomorrow."
Celyn Khoo and Bertille DuPont as tied for 31st after the second round. Freshman Katilin Collom is four back of that dup, tied for 51st with fellow frosh Chaithra Katamneni tied for 63rd.
The team race is likely out of reach as BYU (-7) and the host Aggies (-3) have distanced themselves from the field. But Nevada, in sixth place, is just nine shots back of third place Idaho.
"The team can move up a few places with a solid round tomorrow," Takaishi said. "We need to stick to our gameplan, miss in the right spots and make some birdies."
Nevada, which won a team title in the spring for the first time since 2006, has not had an individual title since Lauren Hernandez won the Red Rocks Invitational in the spring of 2011.
The tournament is being played at NM State Golf Course in Las Cruces, a par-72, 6,358-yard track. In addition to the host Aggies, the field consists of BYU, Iowa, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Idaho, Nevada, Boise State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, UTEP, North Texas, Utah Valley and UT Rio Grande Valley.
