LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior Caryn Khoo matched her career-low round and was one shot off the school record with a first-round 69 at the Aggie Invitational on Monday.
Khoo had four birdies and one bogey to get to 3 under for the round and she sits alone in third place with 36 holes to play at NM State Golf Course.
"Caryn played very well today," third-year coach Kathleen Takaishi said. "She finished the round and kept it under par. That should give her some confidence for the rest of the fall."
Khoo's round led a Nevada team that is seventh overall after the first round. The Wolf Pack shot 300 on the day and is 12 over. BYU leads the way at 6 under with the host Aggies at even par.
"We are going to make some adjustments with how we play certain holes," Takaishi said. "We are only five shots out of third place right now and we can make a move tomorrow."
Sophomore Celyn Khoo opened with a 75 on Monday and is tied for 26th, two shots ahead of junior Bertille DuPont. Freshman Kaitlin Collom had a 79 and Chaithra Katamneni shot 81.
The teams will play the second round on Tuesday and conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday.
The tournament is played at NM State Golf Course in Las Cruces, a par-72, 6,358-yard track. In addition to the host Aggies, the field consists of BYU, Iowa, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Idaho, Nevada, Boise State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, UTEP, North Texas, Utah Valley and UT Rio Grande Valley.
