Nevada Postgame Quotes (UNLV 23, Nevada 17)
Head coach Brian Polian
Opening remark…
"We're incredibly disappointed right now. The team's in a lot of pain, as am I. Give UNLV a ton of credit. They made a couple more plays than we did."
On Nevada's first half struggles…
"The first half was ugly. We just didn't make any plays in the first half on offense. We did a very poor job keeping our poise, we had silly penalties. Just way too many self-inflicted wounds in the second half."
On the team's efforts in the fourth quarter…
"We fought our tails off to get back into the game. And then, with a minute to go in the game, we have to find ways to make more plays. You gotta make plays, we gotta find a way. The game was lost by our inability to make plays when we needed to make them."
On the team's overall effort…
"I thought out guys played hard. I thought they competed. It just wasn't very pretty. I know that this game is important, but I can assure that no one in the community is hurting as much as our team is right now."
On the team's injuries and missing players…
"We lost our top-two nickels in the first half and had to take a corner and move him there. Obviously, when we lose Hasaan, it's a big deal. Not having Yates hurt, there's no doubt, but this is real life. It's a life of adversity, and we're facing a lot of it right now. We need to hang together as a family. We need to get back to work, because there's a lot of football in front of us. Nobody cares. Everyone's got injuries, we have to find a way to play."
On the team's starting field position…
"You can't call your normal stuff when you're starting drives on your four, your two and your six yard line. The odds of people going 95 yards is slim at any level."
On how the team can respond from this loss…
"We have a lot of football left. We can't let UNLV beat us twice. We have to get the injured guys back as quickly as we can and get back to work because there is a lot of football left. That is what we have to do. That is what resilient people do. There's a lot of season left."
Senior LB Jordan Dobrich
Opening remarks…
"As a general consensus, we're all disappointed. As a team, we know we left a lot on the field. I really think we had more to give and that's what really hurts us the most."
On the performance of the defense…
"I thought the defense played alright. I know we made some mistakes. We were disappointed with how quickly they scored on us in the first quarter. We had opportunities to make more plays and we just didn't make those."
On losing an important rivalry game…
"We definitely understand the gravity of the game and the gravity of the loss. This one is definitely going to hurt more, but we're not going to let that define our season."
Senior DE Lenny Jones
On his early assessment of the defense…
"Before looking at film, I can say we didn't tackle well. I'm not sure if we were in our gaps. Letting those guys punt from the 40 - that hurt us."
On handling a loss and getting ready for next week… "The only way to bounce back is to get a win next week. If you let a game like this control you, then you'll be a two-win team. If we let this loss take us down, we're not the team we thought we were."
Junior QB Tyler Stewart
On Nevada's field position…
"We can't blame it on field position. We have to be able to execute no matter where we are on the field. But it does limit your playbook."
On losing a rivalry game…
"This loss is a bit more of a stinger. But it happens, and we have to get back in there and watch film and fix what happened."
Senior RB Don Jackson
Opening remarks…
"Everybody's crushed man. This is definitely not a good feeling. If you loss any game, especially a close game where you know you could win it, you feel crushed."
On bouncing back from a loss…
"It's frustrating, but I'm not going to let UNLV beat this team twice - simple as that. We still have seven conference games in a wide-open conference. We have to go take advantage of that. We have to go focus on the things we messed up on and get better at that."
On learning from mistakes…
"It's a learning experience for sure - for each individual on this team, it's a learning experience. We need to stick to the guys who have been there. Stick to the guys who love you. The noise outside is going to be ridiculous. We just have to stick it out and keep being a family. The sun's going to come back up tomorrow, and we're going to work. We're not going to let this one loss take us. It's even more motivation. Losses show you things and we have to make sure that we learn from this stuff."
