RENO, Nev. – Nevada Athletics is partnering with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada for the Can the Spartans food drive, sponsored by Nevada State Bank.
Donations can be made to any Nevada State Bank location in Northern Nevada through Oct. 30 or at the Nevada vs. Hawaii game this Saturday, Oct. 24. The amount of food collected will be announced at halftime of the Nov. 14 game against San Jose State, where a check will also be presented.
“The Food Bank is a great organization and I’m glad we have such a great partnership with them,” said Rhonda Bennett, senior associate athletic director for Nevada. “I hope all our fans join us in making hunger history.”
The Can the Spartans food drive is part of an ongoing effort between Nevada Athletics and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to create a “One Hunger-Free Community, One Pack.” As we approach the holidays and colder temperatures, the demand for food for those in need increases. The Northern Nevada Food Bank is looking for non-expired nonperishable items like peanut butter, pastas, canned vegetables and fruits, kid-friendly snacks and baby food.
“We’re so grateful for the generous support that Wolf Pack fans offer our neighbors in need,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, director of marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “It would be impossible for us to meet the increased needs at this time of year without these valuable partnerships. We thank Wolf Pack Athletics, the fans and Nevada State Bank for their support for this exciting yearly drive.”
Each month, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada provides assistance to more than 103,000 people through their network of more than 135 partner agencies and direct service programs. More than half of the clients they serve are children and seniors. In fact, one in every four children in Nevada is considered food-insecure.
