Riverside, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's tennis team truly came to compete in their season opening match today against UC Riverside. The Pack has ended their first day of competition in 2015 undefeated. It was a quick and fulfilling 7-0 victory over the Highlanders that has given the Pack confidence leading into tomorrow's match.
"The girls played well and executed the structure that we have been working on. The training camp is paying off, and they are ready to start the season strong. Even though the scoring format is changing this season, they adapted really well and it helped us get the win today" head coach Guillaume Tonelli said.
In doubles action, Sheila Moales and Blaga Delic defeated Courtney Pattugalan and Chloe Pham by a quick score of 6-2. Senior duo, Sheila Smiley and Juliette Legendre dominated in their match against Karla Dulay and Kassie Truong, by a score of 6-2. In the last doubles match of the day, Monika Magusiak and Elissa Pavelea topped it off by defeating Natalie Penner and Tamila Vaksman, by a score of 6-4.
In Singles action, Sheila Morales started the Pack out strong, overcoming Chloe Pham, by a score of 6-5, 6-0. Juliette Legendre defeated Courtney Pattugalan by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Keeping the victories going, Sheila Smiley defeated Karla Dulay in a hard fought battle by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 10-6.
Being undefeated sometimes may cause a team to led up, and take the passenger seat, however, the Pack kept battling and fighting. Blaga Delic kept the ball rolling defeating Natalie Penner 6-3, 6-1. Monika Magusiak rallied back and forth against Caroline Hall, and ended with victory, by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-7. On the last match of the day, Sara Korzeniecki defeated Sophie El-Kara by a score of 6-0, 6-4. Korzeniecki's win ended the Pack with a undefeated and flawless day.
"I am proud of the players, they have been practicing hard off and on the court, and today, they showed a lot of heart and pride."
The Pack will travel to Fullerton, Calif. tonight, preparing themselves for tomorrow's match against Cal State Fullerton at 11 am.
