LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Nevada soccer team opened Mountain West play with a 4-0 setback to Wyoming Friday afternoon at Madrid Sports Complex.
The Cowgirls (3-5-1, 1-0-0 MW) got on the board early in the first half, scoring a goal in the eighth minute. Setting up the score was Wyoming's Alison Clarke, who fired a shot on goal with the initial save being made by Nevada (3-6-1, 0-1-0 MW) goalkeeper Devyn Bryar. The rebound came right to freshman Alisha Bass who struck the ball to the back of the net and put her team ahead by a goal. Bass also recorded the Cowgirls second tally of the match just 10 minutes later. Both goals were unassisted.
The Wolf Pack found a couple of scoring chances towards the end of the opening period as both senior Chrisalyn Fonte and junior Erin Saxton booted shots on target, but were stopped by Wyoming goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree. Because of the saves by Rowntree, the Pack entered halftime trailing by two goals.
Wyoming wasted little time in going up by three as the Cowgirls registered their third score of the contest five minutes into the start of the second half. Kaitlyn Lomsnes took the ball down through the middle of the box and fired a shot into the lower corner of the net to put her team ahead 3-0. Much like the first set of goals in the opening half, the Cowgirls scored their second goal of the half in quick fashion. In the 57th minute, Kasey Curtis recorded her fourth goal of the season on a header from a free kick, providing Wyoming with an insurance marker.
The Pack earned a season-best 12 corner kick opportunities in the match but could not get anything going from them. Wyoming edged Nevada in shots during the match, 14-12. Bryar stopped a total of six shots, while the Pack forced the Cowgirls' goalkeeper duo of Rowntree and Alex Boehm to make seven saves.
Nevada remains on the road and travels to Fort Collins, Colo. on Sunday to take on Colorado State beginning at noon as conference action continues.
