TUCSON, Ariz. - A wild, lightning filled, late evening in Tucson resulted in a 4-0 loss for the Nevada soccer team against Arizona.
"We went down by two goals early and weren't able to capitalize on our chances," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "The weather delay was something we have dealt with before and we responded well. I thought we took control of the game leading into the half."
With the start time already prolonged due to weather delays from the previous game between Arizona State and New Mexico State, the Wildcats (4-1-1) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard with a goal 1:22 into the opening of the match. Arizona's Gabi Stoian took a pass from Lexe Selman off a corner kick and launched a shot that sailed over a diving
Devyn Bryar in net for the Wolf Pack (2-4-1). Stoian and Selman connected once more in the 12th minute to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0.
Before a 90-minute lightning delay halted the match, Nevada began an onslaught of scoring chances in front of the Arizona net. Off a corner kick from senior
Madison Lorenzen, freshman
Mei-Li Madamba rifled a shot that rang off the crossbar and was cleared away by an Arizona defender, setting up another corner kick opportunity for the Pack. This time Lorenzen found classmate
Chrisalyn Fonte whose strong header was stopped by Wildcats goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman. Lorenzen was granted one more corner kick for Nevada before the lightning began to circle in, stopping the match after 17:24 had elapsed.
Coming out of the delay, neither team could find the back of the net but each side put up a fair amount of shots in the remainder of the first half. In the 34th minute, senior
Bobby Reilly nearly cut the deficit in half with a shot that was smothered by Kaufman. Fonte did her best to get the Pack on the board two minutes later but was also denied by Kaufman and the Wildcats took a two-goal lead into halftime.
In the second half, after Bryar had made seven consecutive saves on Arizona shot on goal attempts, the Wildcats struck for another in the 71st minute. Arizona's Mykaylin Rosenquist sent a long ball towards the net, forcing Bryar to come out and make a play on it, however, Alexandra Doller got a head on the ball first and found the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage.
As the final minutes ticked away, Arizona secured one more on the scoresheet in the 86th minute as Stoian netted the hat trick and put her team up by four. The Wolf Pack was outshot by a 25-8 margin in the contest. Bryar stopped a total of 10 shots.
"Our mistakes cost us tonight and we need to learn from them to eliminate a result like this in the future," Price said. "We have a lot of games left, starting Sunday against Arizona State."
Nevada remains in Tucson to face another Pac-12 opponent in Arizona State on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. PST.
