Sam Willoughby had a stellar tournament and was awarded for her performance by being named to the All-Tournament team. The Jamul, Calif. native totaled 40 kills and 11 blocks on the weekend as she led the Pack to two victories to kick off the young 2014 season.
Nevada came out strong against South Alabama as they took the first set, 25-21, and second, 25-13. In the second frame, the Pack posted an impressive .667 hitting percentage (13-for-18) with senior middle blocker
Tessa Lea'ea leading the way with five kills on five attempts.
The Jaguars prevented the sweep by narrowly winning the third set, 25-22, but Nevada roared back by clinching in the fourth set in a rout, 25-14, to end the weekend on a high note.
In Saturday's first match, after the Waves won the first two sets to take a commanding lead, the Pack countered by claiming the next two frames. In the third, with score tied at 15-15, sophomore
Lyndsey Anderson, who would go on to finish the match with a double-double, gave Nevada the lead with a service ace, followed by a kill from Lea'ea. The Pack did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the set.
Nevada led by as many as seven in the fourth set led by Lea'ea's four kills and four blocks to force the home team to a fifth and deciding set. The Pack hung close but could not pull out the win as they lost the fifth set, 15-7.
Ruth Lawanson's club will have the next week off before returning home to the Virginia Street Gym for the home opener against Sacramento State on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
