RENO, Nev. - In response to fan feedback and working in cooperation with city and police officials, the Nevada athletics department will implement new traffic flow protocols this football season with the changes designed for a safe and efficient exit from campus on gamedays.

The most notable change will be on Virginia Street with all four lanes being utilized after games in one direction - north from 17th towards McCarran Boulevard, and south from 16th street all the way to Ninth Street.

In conjunction with the Reno Police Department and University Police, officers will control traffic on Virginia Street at the intersections with Ninth, Eighth and Maple streets to provide for more efficient access to I-80, in both directions, and the downtown corridor.

"Our fans told us that this was an issue that needed to be addressed. We listened and we are responding," said athletics director Doug Knuth. "We've had great support from city government officials, University administration and our local and campus law enforcement on this initiative. I believe this will contribute to a more positive overall fan experience on gamedays."

Beginning in the second half of home games, officers and staff will be stationed on Virginia Street to help direct traffic. Fans parked in the West Stadium Garage, the Brian Whalen Garage and other areas south of the stadium will be directed south onto Virginia Street, utilizing all four lanes.

Fans parked in the north lots on campus will be directed north on Virginia Street, using all four lanes, to access McCarran Boulevard or to continue north on Virginia Street. Southbound traffic on Virginia Street from north of campus will be directed south on Sierra Street.

Law enforcement will monitor the flow of traffic and dispatch officers as needed to address bottlenecks and other issues that may arise. Officials will monitor traffic flow and adjust for future games as necessary.
