COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A goal in the 80th minute pushed Air Force past the University of Nevada soccer team Friday evening by the final score of 1-0 in Mountain West play.
"We gave up a late goal and pushed hard to even the game in the final 10 minutes," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "Our players have been battling a ton of adversity this year and are making a constant effort to be their best. I thought we had some quality chances in the second half and made some successful adjustments, unfortunately we weren't able to change the outcome."
Despite the zeros on the scoreboard after the first half, the opening period had a fair amount of action to it and featured a total of eight shots. The Falcons (6-7-1, 3-3-1 MW) posted seven of those eight shots but only tested Nevada (4-11-1, 1-6-0 MW) goalkeeper Devyn Bryar with one of them. Freshman Angel Meriwether registered the Wolf Pack shot in the first half, sending one just wide to the left with time expiring in the period.
The Pack picked up its game in the second half, totaling six shots in the period, with three of them on net. In a short time span 10 minutes into the start of the second half, sophomore Brianna Bosson and Meriwether each posted shots on target but were held off the scoreboard by Air Force goalkeeper Alex Kahalley.
It was the Falcons who found the game-winning strike in the 80th minute when Kaitlyn Ennis found Megan Schulze from 20 yards out for the score. Nevada had a couple more scoring chances as the minutes ticked down with Meriwether registering another shot on goal with under five to play, but was stopped by Kahalley.
Bryar stopped a total of four shots, while Kahalley made three saves. Air Force outshot Nevada by a 15-7 margin and held the upper hand in corner kicks, 5-1.
Nevada remains in Colorado Springs to take on Colorado College this Sunday at 11 a.m. PST.
