RENO, Nev. - A goal in the 60th minute proved to be the difference maker in a 1-0 Mountain West loss for the Nevada soccer team Sunday afternoon against New Mexico.
The Lobos (5-4-2, 3-1-2 MW) controlled much of the opening half of play, registering eight shots to the two produced by the Wolf Pack (4-10-1, 1-5-0 MW). New Mexico generated solid scoring chances with most of its first half shots, forcing Nevada goalkeeper Devyn Bryar to make six saves. Bryar's play in net resulted in a scoreless contest heading into halftime.
New Mexico found ways to keep the ball away from its opposition again in the second half, outshooting the Pack once more in the half, 6-4. In the 60th minute the Lobos broke through for the game's only goal. Off of a Lobos throw in, the ball was scrambled for in and around the front of the net before Emily Chavez got a foot on the ball and sent it in past the line for the score.
Late in the half, the Wolf Pack had one of its best scoring opportunities of the match and a chance to tie the Lobos in the 83rd minute. After a foul called on New Mexico, the Pack set up a free kick from about 30 yards out. Angel Meriwether dished the ball out to Madison Lorenzen on the near side but Lorenzen's shot rang just high above the net and out of danger.
New Mexico led in shot totals for the game, 14-6 and corner kicks, 6-3. Bryar made a total of eight stops in the match, while UNM goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich stopped two shots.
Nevada hits the road for four matches beginning this Friday with a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. for a 5 p.m. PST Mountain West showdown with Air Force.
