RENO, Nev. - Despite a closely fought contest, the University of Nevada men's tennis team fell to conference foe No. 61 New Mexico by a score of 4-3 on Friday.
The Wolf Pack (8-10, 0-3 MW) battled hard all day against the Lobos (11-11, 2-2 MW), but in the end could not pull out the victory. Nevada began the day strong in doubles with two victories to snag the early point and came away with two singles victories to finish the day, but was not enough to overcome New Mexico. Despite the disappointing finish, head coach Erik Burton was content with how his team had performed.
"I think in general, every court put out a solid effort," he said. "It was tight in doubles but we were able to pull it out. Even though Moez fell in the last set, I was very happy with how he played. Playing a senior is rough, but he battled well, and he always seems to rise to the occasion. Fernando (Sunago) had a tough battle too, both he and his opponent were cramping but he was victorious, and those matches are what we live for.
"I'm not extremely upset, but there are some things to build on before we play as a team well."
In singles, Andrew Poustie seized the first victory over Mads Hegelund, as he cruised in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Fernando Sunago walked away with the other victory, as it took three sets to defeat Mitch McDaniels 1-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(5).
In doubles, the pair of Poustie and Fernando Sunago powered past the team of Phillips and Sam Iftikhar 8-4 for the first victory. The second came from the team of Moez Echargui and Quentin Mege, as they pulled out the extended set victory of the pair of Conor Berg and Andrew Van Dev Vyver by a score of 9-8(8-7).
The Wolf Pack returns to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. to battle Air Force in a Mountain West showdown.
