TUSCON, Ariz. - The University of Nevada men's tennis team collected eight wins en route to a 7-0 victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday.
The Wolf Pack (2-0) kept its momentum rolling by picking up their second victory of the week, as they steamrolled Northern Arizona in their dual match. In doubles play, the Pack notched two victories to secure the doubles point. The team of Quentin Mege and Moez Echargui scored the first victory by cruising past the team of Patrick Schimmelbauer and Kester Black by a score of 8-2. Newcomers Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie also continued their winning ways, as they earned a 8-5 victory over Alan Barrios and Dominic Bermudez. Even in securing the doubles point, head coach Erik Burton wasn't quite satisfied with the play he saw.
"Doubles was tough today, but we pulled out the win," Burton said. "We definitely need to improve in doubles."
It was a much different story for singles play however, as some Pack players were able to jump out in front of matches by winning the first set and finishing off their opponents quickly. Co-captain Victor Ouvrard was victorious in his singles match against Shaun Waters in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Other co-captain Mege was able to roll in his match against Robert Martin 6-2, 6-0, while Echargui found a similar as he also came away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Patrick Schimmelbauer. Allan also continued his winning ways in his short collegiate career, as he posted a victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 over Kester Black.
Not every match was easy on Saturday, as there were also two nailbiters for the Pack in singles play. Fernando Sunago battled against Bermudez before he was able to secure the victory 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 in a 10-point tiebreaker. Philip Hinijosa also needed a 10-point tiebreaker in his match against Alan Barrios before he came away with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 victory.
"Our entire lineup played well and we look forward to the battle tomorrow with a very tough Arizona Wildcat team," Burton said.
That match will be begin at 11 A.M. on Sunday, Jan. 20.
