RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada men's tennis team won all nine matches against Portland State Sunday, beating the Vikings by a final score of 7-0 at Lakeridge Tennis Club.
Nevada improved to 8-10 (1-3 WAC) with the win, while Portland State fell to 2-15 (0-6 Big Sky).
"We played well today and came back strong after a tough loss to New Mexico State," head coach Erik Burton said.
The win marked the first time Nevada has shutout an opponent since March 8, 2009, when the Wolf Pack went on the road to sweep UC Davis. On Sunday, Nevada took the three doubles matches played by scores of 8-4, 8-2 and 9-7 at the first three positions, respectively.
The wins secured the doubles point and put Nevada up 1-0 for the second match in a row.
The only team to play out of the No. 1 doubles position in dual play, Wessim Derbel and Fernando Sunago, won their eighth match of the season over Roman Marqoulis and Mitch Somach.
After sweeping the doubles action, the Pack tore through the Vikings in singles play, losing only one set en route to the shutout. Derbel won his 14th match of the dual season and third in a row, all coming at the first singles spot, to improve to 24-6 on the year. He did not lose a game to Marqoulis, winning 6-0, 6-0. Victor Ouvrard defeated Mitch Somach 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 9-8 out of the second spot in dual play.
The Pack will take next week off before taking on Utah State and UC Davis on April 20 and 21. The matches are both scheduled to be played at noon at Lakeridge. The tilt with the Aggies will be senior day for the Pack.
