The University of Nevada women's basketball team ended its two-game road trip with a 70-50 loss to New Mexico State Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (5-17, 1-6 WAC) on the season, while New Mexico State improves to (5-17, 2-5 WAC).
Senior Kayla Williams asserted her dominance in the post early on, scoring six straight points in the paint for Nevada. New Mexico State got out to a 12-6 lead over Nevada before Kate Kevorken answered with a three pointer at the 14:02 mark. The Aggies went on a 13-2 run to build a 14 point lead with three minutes left in the half. Nevada answered the run with a three point basket by Kevorken and a layup by Chanelle Brennan to cut the Aggies lead to single digits. New Mexico State's Tabytha Wampler scored a basket in the closing seconds to give the Aggies a 32-21 lead going into halftime.
New Mexico State continued their strong start coming out of the break. Wampler scored 13 points for the Aggies in the first 10 minutes, fueling a 23-9 run. The Wolf Pack struggled on the offensive end in the second half, hitting only nine of their field goal attempts to finish the game shooting 32.7 percent. The Aggies rode Wampler to a 26 point lead at the 5:06 minute mark. The forward finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds as the Aggies marched on to win the game 70-50.
Kayla Williams led Nevada with 12 points. Kate Kevorken and Chanelle Brennan added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Nevada will return home for a three-game home stand beginning with a rematch against Fresno State Saturday 2 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center
