The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell to the San Jose State Spartans 70-63 Wednesday evening.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (5-21, 1-10 WAC) on the season, while San Jose State improves to (9-16, 5-6 WAC).
Senior Kate Kevorken asserted herself early, scoring eight of Nevada's 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Wolf Pack held on to a small lead during that time before the Spartans tied the game at 17-17 on a layup by Brittany Johnson. The basket by Johnson sparked a 15-3 Spartan run that gave San Jose State a 32-20 lead at halftime.
Nevada cut San Jose State's lead down to five on a jumper by Chanelle Brennan and three point basket by Kate Kevorken out of the break. Brennan was hot in the first eight minutes of the second half, scoring 11 points to bring the score to 42-35. The Spartans forced Nevada into several turnovers to extend their lead to 51-38 at the 10:05 minute mark. Nevada showed some fight late, getting within four points on a shot by Brennan with 1:40 to go. Kate Kevorken knocked down a three in the corner on the following possession to bring the score to 62-61 with 45 seconds left. A layup by Myesha Broaden put the Spartans up 64-61. Nevada turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and the Spartans hit their foul shots to win the game 70-63.
Kate Kevorken led Nevada with her third career double-double, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Chanelle Brennan added 17 points.
Nevada will conclude its road trip Saturday against Hawaii at 9:00 PT.
