The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell to San Jose State 86-79 Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (5-15, 1-4 WAC) on the season, while San Jose State improves to (8-12, 3-2 WAC).
Senior guard Amanda Johnson got Nevada off to a nice start, scoring five straight points for the Wolf Pack. With two assists in the opening half, Johnson passed Angie Heer (1997-01) for fifth on the all-time list. The teams were tied at 11-11 before San Jose State got out to a nine point lead at the 5:08 mark. A three-pointer by Emily Burns cut the Spartans lead to six, allowing the Wolf Pack to get down to a 35-32 deficit at the half. Chanelle Brennan led Nevada with nine first half points.
WAC leading scorer Brittany Johnson came out of the break strong for the Spartans, scoring on back to back possessions before Amanda Johnson answered with a three pointer. San Jose State gained its biggest lead of the game at 11 points at the 11:27 mark. The Spartans scored 46 points in the paint to 26 for the Pack. With three minutes left in the game, Nevada got within one point of the Spartans on a jumper by Arielle Wideman. The Spartans increased their lead to five on free throws by Brittany Johnson. Kate Kevorken responded by hitting a three point shot with 40 seconds left, bringing Nevada within two at 81-79. That would be the last made shot for Nevada as the Spartans finished 5-6 from the free throw line to win the game 86-79.
Kate Kevorken led Nevada with 25 points. Chanelle Brennan added 14 points. Freshman Emily Burns recorded her second career double-double, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. San Jose State's Brittany Johnson led all scorers with 32 points.
Nevada will hit the road for a two-game road trip, starting with a visit to Ruston La. Thursday evening. The Wolf Pack will end the trip against New Mexico State Saturday afternoon.
