LOS ANGELES - The University of Nevada men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Loyola Marymount Thursday on the road at the LMU Tennis Center.
The loss dropped Nevada to 1-1, while LMU moved to 1-0.
"It was tough today," head coach Erik Burton said. "Several breaks did not go our way and playing LMU at their place is always tough. We will continue to improve and battle throughout the season."
The match began with LMU taking two of the three doubles matches and the doubles point. The Wolf Pack's win in doubles play came from the team of Wessim Derbel and Fernando Sunago. The pair is now 2-0 on the season.
Derbel, ranked No. 55 individually, is also 2-0 in singles play after Thursday's action, defeating Alex Wilton 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). He is now 9-1 in his last 10 matches dating back to the Fall.
Newcomer Moez Echargui also moved to 2-0 on the singles court with a victory Thursday, defeating Todd Volmari 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Every match was highly contested, with five singles matches going three sets. Sunago took Sebastian Bustamante to a deciding set by way of two tiebreakers, both of which were won by scores of 7-5. The tight play was also exhibited by the No. 6 singles position, where Jordan Rozenfeld fell 5-7, 7-5, 5-7.
Nevada will continue play during the first week of the dual season with a match against New Mexico on Saturday at 4 p.m.
