RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Nevada men's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2012 dual season with a 6-1 win over UC Riverside Wednesday.
Ending the day at 1-0 on the young season, the Wolf Pack dropped the Highlanders to 0-1.
"This win is a great start and will help us continue to build confidence and strength for this season," head coach Erik Burton said.
Nevada swept the doubles play, winning its matches by scores of 8-5, 8-5 and 8-6 respectively. Setting the tone for the afternoon with their 8-5 win, the team of Victor Ouvrard and Moez Echargui won at the No. 2 doubles position.
In singles play, the Pack took hold of the contest to clinch the first six points of the match on its way to a dominating win. The ever-important fourth point came when Fernando Sunago defeated Simon Peters in the No. 5 singles position.
Team captain and No. 55 Wessim Derbel won his first singles match of the year, defeating Felix Macherez 6-1, 6-2.
Nevada will continue to play away from Reno during the first week of the dual campaign, taking on Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
