PORTLAND - It took five sets but the University of Nevada (1-6) defeated Portland (2-5) in the final match of the Portland Nike Invitational tonight by scores of 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16 and 15-13 to win for the first time this season. It was the first victory at Nevada for new head coach Ruth Lawanson.
The Wolf Pack is now 1-6 on the year and went 1-3 in the invitational while Portland fell to 2-5 on the season. The Pilots defeated the Pack last weekend in five sets at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
Nevada won the fourth set 25-16 to force a deciding fifth set. The Pack never trailed in the final set and used a 6-1 run to break a 5-5 tie on the way to the 15-13 victory to take the match 3-2.
Freshman middle blocker Tessa Lea`ea finished with a career-high 18 kills in the match and junior Janelle Batista added 16. Senior setter Tatiana Santiago posted a double-double with 44 assists and 15 digs. Santiago was named to the all-tournament squad. Kelly Chang and Elissa Ji finished with 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Nevada will compete at the Hilton Garden Inn Classic in Berkeley, Calif. next weekend taking on Sacramento State, California and UT Arlington.
