BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Nevada (2-8) knocked off UT Arlington (2-9) in four sets in its final match of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic on Saturday evening. The Wolf Pack lost the first set 25-22 but won the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-16. With the victory the Pack is now 2-8 while the Patriots fell to 2-9.
Freshman middle blocker Tessa Lea'ea was named to the all-tournament team after she averaged 2.45 kills, 1.09 blocks and hit .350 in the three matches.
In set one UTA put together a 5-0 run to break a 7-7 tie and never trailed the rest of the way to win 25-22. Nevada hit .176 in the first set and the Patriots .293.
With set two tied at six the Pack scored two unanswered points and cruised to the 25-17 victory to even the match at one set each. Nevada hit .171 and held UTA to a .029 attack percentage in the second set.
Nevada led most of set three and got a kill from Lea'ea to close out the set 25-16 to give the Pack the 2-1 lead. The Pack hit an outstanding .394 in set three and the Patriots hit .156.
The final set was all Nevada as they won 25-16 to take the match 3-1. Once again the Pack was outstanding in set four hitting .400 and held the Patriots to a negative .056 attack percentage.
Erin Garvey and Janelle Batista led Nevada with 13 kills each while Lea'ea added 12. Setter Tatiana Santiago dished out a match-high 45 assists. Kelly Chang (18), Elissa Ji (17) and Grace Anxo (16) all reached double figures in digs in the match.
Amanda Aguilera and Tara Frantz had 18 and 12 kills respectively for the Patriots. Amanda Welsh finished with 33 assists and 10 digs to record a double-double. Alicia Shaffer posted a match-high 31 digs.
Nevada hit .260 in the match compared to .111 for UTA. The Pack totaled eight blocks and the Patriots four. Batista and Lea'ea topped Nevada with four blocks each while Frantz and Charae Grosser finished with two apiece for UTA.
Nevada is off until Sept. 21 when they host UNLV in the home opener at the Virginia Street Gym. The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
