SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Nevada women's soccer team earned its first victory of 2011 Sunday, defeating Utah 1-0.
Nevada improved to 1-3, while Utah fell to 0-2-1.
"It feels good," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said about the win. "It was an entire team effort and I'm proud of our players today."
The contest's lone goal came from Kori Disarufino in the 82nd minute, when she took a pass from Aleina Dominguez and buried it in the back of the net. The shot came from 15 yards as Dominguez deftly slipped a ball through the Utah defense and onto Disarufino in a good scoring position.
"Kori stayed composed and tucked the ball in the corner for the goal," Price said. "Then we defended hard and managed the game through the final minutes."
Nevada goalkeeper Jenna Riddle made four saves in what was the first individual shutout of her career at Nevada. She has now started each of the first four games of the season for the Wolf Pack.
Chrisalyn Fonte, who earned her first career point with an assist Friday against Idaho State, led the Pack with three shot attempts. Utah's Jen Erickson tied teammate Jenny Hutton with four attempts to lead the game. Erickson also led the game with two shots on goal. As a team the Utes earned a 19-7 advantage in Sunday's contest.
Much of the pressure from Utah came in the first half, but good play from Riddle as well as a team effort in the back, prevented any damage on the scoreboard.
Newcomers continued to be a part of the Wolf Pack rotation, as five saw action against Utah. Madison Lorenzen, Laura Voss and Fonte, all first-year players, started Sunday's match.
The Pack will return home Friday to host the 2011 Wolf Pack Invitational at Mackay Stadium. Nevada and Portland State will clash at 7 p.m., with the weekend's first game, Detroit vs. UNLV, taking place at 4 p.m. Portland State will then take on Detroit at 11 a.m. Sunday, with Nevada meeting interstate rival UNLV at 2 p.m. to round out the action.
"We are excited to bring home the win leading into next weekend," Price said.
