SARATOGA, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Penn State Nittany Lions Sunday. The neutral-site match was played at West Valley College.
The loss dropped Nevada to 0-2, while Penn State improved to 1-1.
"Penn State is a good team and the game provided an important challenge for the development of our program," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said.
The 13 time Big 10 defending champion, Penn State controlled the action for much of the day, attempting 26 shots and scoring twice in each half.
Jenna Riddle got her second straight start in goal for the Wolf Pack, playing 79 minutes and making seven saves. Junior Dana Moreno replaced Riddle for the final 11 minutes of the game. She did not record a save.
Four players, including newcomers Chelsea Fricke and Chrisalyn Fonte, played the full 90 minutes for the Pack. Sophomore Danielle Green and junior Lauren Braman also played the entire contest.
"There were periods in the match where we were successful on both sides of the ball," Price said. "For a stretch in the second half Penn State had difficulty getting out of its own half."
Nevada took three shots that found the target and earned three corner kicks. All of the corners kicks came in the second half.
Highlighted by Fonte and Fricke, Nevada's newcomers have seen significant playing time in its first two matches. Five other newcomers participated against the Nittany Lions, including Madison Lorenzen, who logged 76 minutes Sunday.
Penn State's Kori Chapic led all players with seven shots and three on goal.
Nevada will return to action Friday against Idaho State, in Pocatello, Idaho at 3 p.m. PDT.
"We are a better team having played this game," Price said. "Now we prepare for our matches next weekend."
