STOCKTON, Calif. -- The University of Nevada women's soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 loss on the road against the Pacific Tigers Friday.
Nevada fell to 0-1, while Pacific improved to 1-0.
"We defended well as a team," head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "In the end though, a 10-minute stretch in the second half decided the match."
The Wolf Pack got a chance early, as newcomer Chrisalyn Fonte headed a ball just over the crossbar in the seventh minute off a corner kick by fellow freshman Madison Lorenzen.
Jenna Riddle, who made her first start between the pipes as a member of the Pack, played well early. The junior, who transferred to Nevada from Arizona in 2008, made three saves in the first half and six overall.
Action slowed near the end of the first frame, but Sarah Schmeda was able to get a shot off in the 43rd minute. Blocked by a Pacific defender, it would be the last chance of the half for either team.
Riddle fended off a chance from Pacific's Kortney Agdeppa in the first minute of the second frame for her fourth save. Two minutes later, off a free kick, Renae Mcfadden scored for the Tigers to put them ahead 1-0.
Pacific scored its second goal in the 58th minute, as Kristina Wavomba put her first goal of the year past Riddle to extend the Tiger lead to 2-0.
The final tally of the contest came one minute later from Laura Hogan, also her first of the year.
"During the 10 minutes that ultimately decided the contest, we defended at a standard that is below the one we set for ourselves," Price said.
Danielle Green attempted a team-high three shots for the Pack.
Price added that she was pleased with the way Nevada's newcomers performed.
"I was happy with the way they competed in their first collegiate match," she said.
