RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada volleyball team will hold its annual Silver &?Blue scrimmage at the Virginia Street Gym on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m. The scrimmage is free and open to the public. The Wolf Pack opens the season Aug. 26-27 at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego taking on Portland, UC?Irvine and San Diego State. The home opener is Sept. 21 versus UNLV.
The team will be under the direction of first-year head coach Ruth Lawanson who was the Pack's assistant coach last season. The 2011 squad returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's team that went 13-17 and tied for sixth in the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 7-9 conference mark. Heading the list of returners is senior right side hitter Erin Garvey who earned second-team All-WAC honors last season. Setter Tatiana Santiago returns for her final year after leading the conference in assists in WAC?play in 2010 averaging 11.69 per set. Junior middle blocker Janelle Batista and sophomore outside hitter Grace Anxo are back after earning starting spots last season. Anxo was named to the 2010 WAC?Freshman team.
In addition to the four starters six letterwinners return and will be joined by a redshirt freshman and two true freshmen to compose the 13 member squad.
