BOISE, Idaho - In its final match of the 2011 season, the University of Nevada women's tennis team fell to No. 72 Fresno State, 4-3, in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships Friday.
The match came down to the final points, as the Bulldogs got the victory by the slimmest of margins.
After Nevada dropped the doubles point and fell behind 1-0, it came back with strong play on the singles court. The Wolf Pack won at singles positions No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5, with each win coming in straight sets.
True Freshman Michelle Okhremchuk closed out a stellar first season for Nevada with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Laura Pola at No. 2. The win was Okhremchuk's 20th singles victory this season and her 12th in dual-match play.
With the score tied 3-3, the final singles match to finish, at position No. 6, decided the match. Sophie Stevens fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Mary Abby Hayley, surrendering the fourth point to Fresno State.
Senior Aodhnait Lombard closed out her career with a singles victory, defeating Olga Kirpicheva 6-1, 7-5. Emma Verberne also notched a singles win for the Pack, defeating Bianca Modoc 6-3, 6-2.
