MESA, Ariz. – The University of Nevada women’s golf team is in first place after the first round of the Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Championships on Friday.

The Wolf Pack shot a 301 as a team and leads defending champion San Jose State by one stroke in the 54-hole event. The tournament is being held at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa.

Freshman Joyce Chong carded a 1-over 72 to lead the Wolf Pack in the first round. Chong is tied for second place individually after the first 18 holes. Louise Yi shot 74 and is tied for sixth while senior Lauren Hernandez had a 75 and his tied for eighth place. Ana Patricia de la Maza shot 80 and Jamie Yam had an 82 to round out the team’s scores.

“Those three – Joyce, Louise and Lauren – played excellent today and that’s great to see,” said first-year coach Chad Spencer. “You can’t win the tournament the first day but you can certainly lose it so I am happy to be where we are at. This course is tough – it’ hard and it’s fast and you have to miss it in the right places.”

Nevada leads the Spartans by a stroke and has a four-shot lead over Hawaii and New Mexico State, who are tied for third at 305. Fresno State is fourth at 308 with Boise State (310) fifth and Idaho (314) sixth.

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro leads the individual race after a first-round 68.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament will take place on Saturday with the final round Sunday.
