KANEOHE, Hawaii – Lauren Hernandez tied for seventh place individually and the Nevada women’s golf team took fifth place in a strong field at the Donnis Thompson Invitational hosted by Hawaii at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
Nevada shot a 313 on Tuesday in the final round and was fifth place, ahead of No. 12 Vanderbilt in the 19-team tournament. No. 10 Arizona State won the event going away and the Sun Devils were followed by No. 6 Arizona, No. 21 Notre Dame and No. 49 UNLV.
“I am very proud of this team for what they did this week and I’m excited about the way we are playing right now,” first-year head coach Chad Spencer said. “We finished behind some good teams, ranked teams but for us to finish fifth in this field is a great accomplishment.”
Hernandez, who won two weeks ago in Arizona and tied for 12th last week in Fresno, was 6 over at one point on Tuesday before battling back in windy conditions to finish with a 76. Jamie Yam finished tied for 26th and Louise Yi tied for 34th. Ana Patricia de la Maza came in tied for 37th and freshman Joyce Chong tied for 45th in the 108-player field.
“All five of our players finished within 10 shots of each other and that’s a great sign,” Spencer said. “This team needs depth and we’re starting to see it. I’m excited to see that progression as we get closer to the WAC Championships in a couple of weeks.”
Nevada will head to the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine in two weeks.
