RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team will work to raise awareness and funds for the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund and Susan G. Komen for the Cure when it hosts the University of Hawai'i on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center. The event has become an annual charitable effort for Nevada who will wear pink jerseys in honor of the cause.
Nevada will be working to support the Kay Yow Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help fight breast cancer. Kay Yow was the head coach at NC State who was a prominent figure for her fight against breast cancer, which she lost a year and a half ago. There will be a pink treadmill walk-a-thon and sales of the book of Yow's story, Leader of the Pack, during the game to help raise funds for the organizations. Copies of the book authored by Stephanie Zonars are being donated by Nevada's head coach Jane Albright.
In addition, there will be a "pass the bucket" collection of donations and Silver and Blue Outfitters will be selling special pink Nevada shirts with a portion of the proceeds going straight to both groups.
"Kay's philosophy would be to keep part of any money raised local," Albright, a close personal friend of Yow said. "That's why we're partnering with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We really want people to come out for charitable support, but also see some really great basketball games."
The Wolf Pack will also host San Jose State on Thursday at 7 p.m. For that game, Nevada will be offering season ticket holders the chance to bring to friends to the game for free. In addition, fans can check out the Wolf Pack on Facebook and download a flyer that will provide free admittance to the game as well as a coupon for a free Nevada water bottle.
As well as these promotions, Nevada will be continuing its player trading card promotion at both games. Fans will be able to get cards for Tahnee Robinson and Arielle Wideman on Thursday night and Johnna Ward and Kate Kevorken on Saturday night. Players will be available to sign their cards following the game.
Nevada is currently 15-7 (4-5 WAC) on the year coming off a 66-47 win at San Jose State. The Pack also played at Hawai'i earlier this season, winning 75-62 on the islands.
