The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell to Long Island 67-51 in the opening game of the inaugural Peppermill Holiday Classic Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, Nevada drops to 3-9 on the season, while Long Island improves to 11-2.

Nevada jumped ahead to a 9-3 lead to begin the game. Long Island fought back to claim the lead after Nevada found trouble on the offensive end. The Pack went eight minutes without a field goal until Amanda Johnson hit a jump shot to close Long Island's lead to two at 16-14. Nevada got back in front 17-16 before the Blackbirds went on a 15-0 run to take a 31-17 lead into halftime.

Long Island came out of the break looking to put Nevada away. The Blackbirds pressured Nevada, scoring 25 points off of the Pack's turnovers. Nevada struggled to find an answer for Long Island's Ashley Palmer who led the game in scoring with 27 points.

Kate Kevorken led Nevada with 20 points. Kayla Williams also finished in double figures with 14 points.

Nevada will face the loser of the Mississippi State and Oklahoma State game tomorrow evening in the consolation game at 5 p.m.

Church groups are invited to attend the final day of the Peppermill Holiday Classic for free. Fans wishing to take part in the promotion simply need to bring in a church bulletin to the game to get four people in for free.
