STATELINE, Nev. -- Brian Knoll recorded the best tournament score and finish of his Nevada career as the sophomore shot 71 on Tuesday in the final round of the Wolf Pack Classic to finish in second place with a 1-over-par 217.
Knoll and senior Kevin Lucas each shot 71 on Tuesday but Nevada was unable to hold on to the lead it had entering the day as San Jose State came back to win the tournament by five strokes. The Spartans, ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek Sagarin Rankings, finished with a team score of 881 (17 over par). Nevada was second at 886, followed by Loyola Marymount (891, Sacramento State (892) and San Diego (893).
Jay Myers of San Jose State shot 70 on Tuesday to take medalist honors with a 1-under 215 for the 54-hole tournament. Knoll was named the runner-up with his final round 71 as his tied Sacramento State's Jordan Weir, who shot a 73 in the final round. Lucas tied for fourth, a shot back of Knoll and Weir.
Freshman Gustavo Chuang entered the day tied for the lead but fell back with an 80 on Tuesday as he tied for 20th. Freshman Taylor Knoll shot 79 and tied for 31 while Andrew Cornella finished 78th.
A highlight of the day for the Wolf Pack was senior Gavin Kwon, who also shot 71 while competing as an individual. Kwon was aided with a hole-in-one on the 205-yard 12th hole.
Kwon tied for 35th in the tournament. Zak Griffiths and Philip Snow also competed as individuals for Nevada and they tied for 64th and 70th, respectively.
Nevada returns to action Oct. 24-25 at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
