STOCKTON, Calif. - Kevin Lucas fired a 66 to lead the Nevada men's golf team to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Pacific Invitational on Monday.
Nevada shot 278 as a team and is tied with Denver for the top spot at the 54-hole tournament, which is being played at Brookside Country Club.
The Wolf Pack had a strong day from one through five as freshman Gustavo Chuang shot 69 and fellow frosh Zak Griffiths fired and even-par 71. Gavin Kwon and Brian Knoll each carded a 72 to round out the Nevada contingent.
Lucas's round, which marks a career low for the senior at Nevada, has him one shot off the lead in the individual standings as Charlotte's Olafur Loftsson shot 65 in the first round. Chuang is tied for 10th and Griffith's is tied for 20th.
"We came here with a lot of confidence and we got off to a pretty good start," Nevada coach Jacob Wilner said. "Now we need to carry it through the rest of the tournament. I was happy for Kevin. He struck the ball extremely well today."
The tournament continues on Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.
